Challenges, Sad Situations, Facts, Projects, Writing, Fun Things 3 Comments »My class had to choose an endangered animal and fill in a sheet a about it. I did the Marine Otter. Here is the info about it.
The marine otters scientific name is Lontra Felina. They have strong claws on their well webbed and moderately sized feet.Their hair looks different to other otters because it looks rough and course. The top layer of their hair is 20mm long, where as the bottom layer of hair is 12mm long. They are dark brown with a lighter underside that looks drab and has a greyish, yellow-brown reddish colour. When born they weigh 3-5 pounds.
The gestation period is 4-5 months. The females have their first pup at 4-5 years of age. In California the have their pup in between January and March, but in Alaska the pups are born in late spring to summer. The pup learns to swim at the age of 4 weeks. The mother otter carries the pup on her chest. Their life spand is 15-20 years of age.
They live in rocky coastlines, secluded bays and inlets near river estuaries. They live in small caves just above the water mark.
They eat crabs, creastceans mollusks and bottom living organisms. Sometimes they eat small prawns. Basically they eat fish as their main diet.
They are social animals and stay in groups of about 10 otters, these groups are called “rafts”. The otters use rocks and other hard objects to break shellfish and other food. Right now the population of otters is about 2000.
They are endangered because they are hunted for their beautiful fur. They also die from oil spills, infections, parasites, diseases, boat strikes, entanglements and toxins. The Marine Mammal Centre is rescuing them from oil spills and curing them from sickness.
A Marine Otter’s skin never gets wet. River otters, weasels and badgers are the Marine Otter’s relatives. Big kidneys help them to drink salt water. Their predators are the killer whales, sharks and sea lions, the bald headed eagle is the predator of the pups.
